Gopuff used survey data, beverage sales and trend data to determine the most popular summer beverages and beverages in the country, as well as the thirstiest cities and the best liquid energy options. Americans are preparing for the hottest summer ever recorded. Gopuff’s Integrated Data & Consumer Research team analyzed all available data to determine this year’s “summer sip.”
Daniel Folkman, Gopuff’s VP of Business, stated, “With a vertically-integrated model, we can leverage real-time, unique behavioral, and survey data to understand which beverages Gopuff customers like most – and make predictions regarding future consumer behavior.” We have seen many changes in our lives over the past months. As we continue to analyze and forecast trends for our partners, we found that Americans are more interested in having all types of beverages delivered.
Gopuff’s beverages sales are experiencing a huge boost due to Americans staying home more than ever. In fact, alcohol orders have increased exponentially in the first five months 2020. The highest order volumes have been seen in Chicago, Boston, Washington, D.C. and Boston this year. However, other cities are struggling since March’s pandemic. These include El Paso (Texas), Bridgeport, Stamford, and Norwalk, Conn., Albuquerque (N.M.), Detroit, Mich., and Albany, Schenectady, and Troy, N.Y.
Other summer beverage trends are based on survey data and sales:
2020 Summer Sip: Spiked Setzers
Hard and spiked seltzers continue to dominate the summer drinks category based on units sales and orders. Domestic beer and red wine are close behind. Nearly half (48%) of Gopuff customers prefer White Claw to other brands such as Twisted Tea, Mike’s Hard Lemonade, Truly and Twisted Tea (black cherry, lemonade, and mango are the most popular single White Claw flavors). The survey revealed that 28 percent of Gopuff customers plan to drink beer (Bud Light, Miller Lite), 26 percent plan to drink mostly hard seltzers like White Claw and Truly, and 19 percent plan on drinking wine (19 Crimes or Black Box).
Americans Love Fizz
The non-spiked seltzer market continues to grow with a 63% increase in sales from March to April for popular sparkling waters brands such as Waterloo or Spindrift. Seltzer has been gaining popularity as a tasty, bubbly treat that is also low in guilt over the years. Many shoppers are now more interested in seltzer, vitamins and enhanced water, since the pandemic has encouraged them to be healthy.
The Homebound Effect: What Hour is Happy Hour
Gopuff customers are more likely than last year to order alcohol between 12 and 6 p.m. and less to order it between 6 pm. and midnight. Customers are more likely to order alcohol on weekdays in 2019 than they were in 2019. However, once weekend rolls around, there’s reason for celebration – 69 per cent of weekly Korbel Brut Champagne orders take place between 6 p.m. and midnight, while 60 percent of single 24-ounce cans Miller HighLife are placed during workday hours. The pandemic has made it difficult for consumers to break away from their old ways of thinking about time and structure.
A Alternative Source of Energy
Gopuff has experienced a huge spike in energy drinks sales in the last few months. This is a 210 per cent increase from the start of the year. Red Bull and Monster are the most loved brands. Reign is the most well-known brand of new energy drinks, while BODYARMOR and sports drinks such as Powerade, Gatorade, and Vitamin Water, have also seen significant sales growth. Consumers began to look for new ways to power their workdays as more people work remotely.
