The Ponsonby Post Office, built in 1912 & well known for its ornate exterior & majestic stance against the city skyline, was transformed in 2005 into a 1930's era French Cosmopolitan style Belgian Beer Cafe, & the result is stunning. The cheerful, bright & stylish brasserie inside is complimented by the al fresco dining space in the courtyard, which also features an open fire. We proudly serve authentic Belgian cuisine complimented by an extensive selection of fine Belgian beers & some of the best wines from NZ & Australia. We recommend you try our signature steaming mussel pots, or our famous mussel platters (our full menu & drinks list can be viewed on the Food & Bar pages). We welcome function enquires for 10 to 150 people. We open at 11am Mon - Fri & 9:30am on weekends.

Not so great
After hearing good reviews about Belgian Beer Cafe (and all the radio ads)we decided to treat friends for a night of "Belgian" style. Well, we were only to be disappointed by both food and service. They apparently only have one yard glass in the whole bar. I couldn't believe it, so i asked why... I was told that they are often stolen and therefore no re orders will be made. Hmmm, okay, at $14 dollars for a 350ml beer, that's just poor PR!
The food took ages to arrive and when it did it was merely average. New chef i was told! More information than required, thank you.
I was quite looking forward to desert. Waffles and banana, with maple syrup. Sounds yummy. I didn't order bacon, nor was it on the menu. But i got it. Can you imagine having bacon on a waffle for desert! I just couldn't face it. Tell me, is grilling the banana without first removing it from the skin some sort of culinary trend these days? Perhaps someone needs to tast it, i find it bitter.
The deserts were credited from the bill and a rather feeble excuse was made for the error.
Pity really, we were quite looking forward to a pleasant experience with friends. Ponsonby has a reputation!
We'll be back to Prego's, good old faithful. Never had a bad meal there!

Great frittes
What used to be the old Post Office is now set up as a Belgian bistro and stands proudly on the corner of St Mary's Road.
Quite a bit of the original decor has remained and comes complete with high ceilings and a charming 1920s feel. Discovered that The Ponsonby hosts fortnightly 'dueling pianos' which happened to fall on the night we were there. Two blokes play 'piano classics' and try their hand at a bit of comedy between the ivories (the Michael Jackson joke was sick). The courtyard with open fire was a popular spot despite the cold, but it's possible that this was the escape area away from the pianists. But don't be put off if this isn't your sort of thing. Great food (try the mussels or oysters and frittes) and really good vibe.
