If you’re watching a concert at the Vector Arena, work in the city and catch the train or are gearing up for a night on the town, Auckland’s Britomart area has some superb bars to keep you entertained. Check out the following recommendations.…
1885
Opened in late 2010, this popular bar is a definite hot spot in Britomart. The chic and stylish decor reflects the upmarket wine list and cocktail menu and with the live DJs setting a groovy ambience, it's absolutely one hot bar to check out.
Tyler Street Garage Bar
Since it's opening in March 2011, Tyler Street Garage Bar has been a welcome addition to Britomart. Uber cool, with a New York City feel about it, this is the place to head with a gang of mates for a solid good night out. Awesome outdoor bar upstairs with great views across the harbour.
Agents & Merchants
Hidden down a small alleyway in the heart of downtown Auckland, is Agents & Merchants. A&M would be described as an upmarket wine bar, and deservedly so with over 200 wines on its menu. They also provide delicious tapas, scrummy platters and great cocktails. A lovely bar for catching up with friends, and handy for drinks if you work near by.
Racket
Right next door in the same alleyway is Racket, a wee gem of a bar. The bar has an old Saloon type feel to it – great barn-style swing door - and is small but comforting, thanks to a few wooden tables with mismatched chairs. The drinks menu is laid out in a very creative way - listed inside old diaries and recipe books - which sounds odd but works. Great DJ set and equally matched charming atmosphere.
Smith Bar
A few spots down the road sits Smith bar, who will wine and dine you in style. Their very cool, quirky blast from the past decor is really quite special. They offer great toasted sarnies, an extensive wine list, and cocktails (the Smith Siam is divine). Not to mention ice-cold beers and port. Fancy. Also available for functions.
Northern Steamship Mac’s Brewbar
The Steamship sits on the corner of Quay and Gore Streets, just round the corner from Smith. They are proud of their nine Macs brews on tap and offer lunch and dinner meals with great snacks to share. They also have a pleasing outlook with comfy leather chairs so you can sit and ponder while sipping a few beve's. A great place to visit after work, or to meet up on the weekends with the fella’s before a night on the town.
Brew on Quay
This stylish bar on the corner of Quay Street and Britomart Place is definitely worth a visit. Great upstairs deck with outdoor seating, which is also handy for private functions - thanks to its separate bar. Don't go past this one!
