Waiheke is just a short boat trip from Auckland Harbour or Devonport, making it an excellent destination for a day trip or weekend getaway!
You might want to hire a car or scooter while over there, but the bus services can provide you with a trip around the island if need be. Here are some places work checking out on your Waiheke escape!
Stonyridge Vineyard
If a glass of red engages your senses with its rich, full bodied flavours, then you must visit Stonyridge – purveyors of internationally acclaimed red wine. Stonyridge specialise in Cabernet blends like Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. You’ll find the vineyard at 80 Onetangi Rd and it can be reached by bus. Public tours are very affordable at just $10 for a tour of the cellar, vineyard and olive grove, along white and red wine tasting. These begin at 11.30am on Saturdays and Sundays and run for around 35-45 minutes. Private tours can also be arranged.
Ross Adventures
For kayak hire head to Ross Adventures at Matiatia on Waiheke. Their ‘sit-on top’ style is most popular and great for two hours paddling around Matiatia Harbour. This is a great activity for two people, with your own kayak each or a double-seated kayak. Night Kayaking also provides an exciting experience with guided tours through coves. You will search for phosfloresence alge, which sparks into a bright granular light as your paddle dips into the water.
Waiheke Events
There are some great events happening on Waiheke this year. Check out the International Jazz Festival happening in April; theWaiheke Blues Festival running in August; and the Waiheke Olive Festival is held in November which is a great outing for everyone.
Onetangi Beach Apartments
If you decide to stay the night, it is highly recommended that you book a room at Onetangi Beach Apartments. With its beach-side location and modern, spacious rooms, they also have occasional special offers to take advantage of.
Breakfast On The Beach
If you're visiting Waiheke for a romantic occasion, corporate team bonding, or a five star holiday and you wish to push the boat out a little, consider spending a night or two at the luxurious Breakfast on the beach resort. Located on Blackpool beach in Huruhi Bay, the hotel is positioned right on the waters edge so you can enjoy stunning views and sleep soundly to crashing waves.
Mudbrick Restaurant and Vineyard
Dine alfresco overlooking amazing views of the sea and surrounding islands at Mudbrick Vineyard, or be seated inside amongst elegant, high class interiors. Their online image gallery is a must-see for inspiration. Mudbrick also offers a tour of their beautiful vineyards or gardens and is a popular wedding venue.
If you spend the weekend and the weather turns a bit rough (or you are nursing a sore head from your visit to one of Waiheke's charming vineyards), head to the Waiheke Island Cinema. It’s got comfortable couches and a casual vibe – the staff even let you bring in your own food or drink! It’s open in the afternoons daily and located in Oneroa.
While in the vicinity of Oneroa, make sure you pop into Delight Cafe in Waikare Road just by the main strip of shops in Oneroa, which is a brilliant wee spot for breakfast or lunch. Taking on a Greek/Mediterranean theme, this cafe is something quite a bit different, but the view is amazing and it's especially good to sit and drink a Turkish coffee.
Te Whau Vineyard
With breathtaking views, exquisite food, and a large wine list, Te Whau Vineyard and Cafe located in Te Whau Point is a truly unique wine lover's experience. Te Whau has also recently won the 2010 Metro Magazine award for best Rual Restaurant.
There's heaps of great things to do in Waiheke, and these are just a few magical highlights. Why not tell us more about your experience's or recommend some special spots. We'd love to hear your feedback!
