Big Night In

Snuggle up this winter

July 2009

Now that it's getting cooler in the evenings, there’s nothing cosier than a night in on the sofa, with some takeaways and preparing yourself for a night of movie watching. But where do you get your movies? Just about every suburb has a chain store, perfect if you are after the latest Hollywood blockbuster but what do you do if you’re looking for something a little more leftfield?

Video Ezy in Ponsonby has a huge selection of festival and foreign language films, documentaries, classics, cult and TV series; along with all the major releases. So far I’ve never been disappointed, even when I’ve been hunting out some pretty unusual films, but beware: If the movie you’re seeking didn’t get a New Zealand release check that your DVD player can play other region discs. Failing that, rent a VHS – they’ve got a pretty good selection of those too! Another awesome store for those ‘hard-to-find’ classics is Videon on Dominion Road in Balmoral. It’s worth a look just for the cool retro building.

If you’re looking to buy, then don’t look past Borders on Queen Street. It has a fantastic DVD section… And they sell the odd book there too, if you feel like something a little more cerebral.

If it’s one of those wet nights and you’ve already popped a bag of Butter Lover’s popcorn, then you’ll thank your subscription to Fatso.co.nz – online DVD and game rentals – as your movies will have arrived in your post box earlier that day. They’ve got over 20,000 titles listed and you can keep each disc for as long as you want, which saves a few bucks on late fees when you’re ploughing through Season Four of The Wire.

In 1973, Borders decided to sell new books only; by 1974, the business was in its fourth location, a...
