Fine places to dine
January 2009
North Shore City is home to some of Auckland's best beaches, and also some of its best restaurants with gorgeous views in some circumstances. Here is our pick of where to dine across the Harbour Bridge, and we'd love your feedback too… Share your reviews with us!
Daikoku Takapuna
I don’t know what it is, but there’s nothing quite like the cheap thrill received watching your meal being cooked right in front of you. Daikoku Teppan Yaki in Takapuna offers the taste of Japan with the excitement of a flame grilled meal cooked to your perfection. Be sure to wear something cool because it can get quite warm while you eat.
Eight Point Two
One of North Shore City's most critically acclaimed restaurants, Eight Point Two is perfect for romantic dinners a deux as well as those celebratory nights out. Housed in a beautifully restored villa, it is open Tuesday - Saturday for dinner from 6:00 pm.
Gumdiggers Restaurant
A popular wedding venue, Gumdiggers is located in one of Birkenhead's most beautiful historic buildings and has been owned and operated by Chef James Archibald since 1977. Open Tuesday - Saturday for a la carte dining, it offers fabulous yet affordable meals in a truly memorable setting.
Aroy Dee Thai
If you love Thai, there's no doubt that you will love Aroy Dee in Takapuna. All meals are of a top quality, authentic Thai standard with professional fast and friendly service. Located right next door to the Bruce Mason theatre, there’s plenty of parking nearby.
GPK Restaurant
The Takapuna branch of this popular Ponsonby eaterie offers reasonably priced breakfast, lunch and dinner menus, but is best known for its fantastic wood fired pizzas which are famous throughout New Zealand. The perfect spot for a long lunch or big groups, this consistently busy restaurant also has a branch open in nearby Albany.
Lone Star Café and Bar
Situated in an iconic general store that dates back to 1910 on Hauraki Corner, the Takapuna branch of the popular Lone Star Café and Bar chain has a great kids' menu and also allows BYO wine. The perfect spot for sunset watching and great, no nonsense comfort food.
