Ah, the backpacker – you can’t walk two feet in Auckland without bumping into one. With their oversized luggage, sleeping bags, guitars and jandals, they’re almost a nationality in themselves.
Anyone who’s done they’re OE knows all too well what the hostel scene is like and, although it may only be a place to rest your drunken head after experiencing the sights and sounds of the city, a little bit of cleanliness couldn’t hurt either!

Queen St Backpackers & Hostel
You couldn’t get a more central location than at this hostel. It might cost you a few dollars more per night but you’re right in the heart of the city. Rooms range from $26 per night for a 6 bed dorm to $65 per night if you want a twin dorm.
Base Auckland Backpackers
This award-winning hostel, located on the corner of Queen St and Darby St, makes our list because of one very unique feature. For girls, they offer ‘Sanctuary’ accommodation which gives you a bed in a girl’s only room on a girl’s only floor. Not only that, but you’ll also receive a little pamper hamper choc-a-bloc with goodies for your hair and a big fluffy towel when you arrive. Two thumbs up from us!
Only Fools And Horses Homestay / Backpackers
Situated near Murawai, one of Auckland’s most beautiful beaches, the Only Fools And Horses Backpackers is a backpackers that’s nothing like the norm! For $30 per person per night, you can stay in ‘The Barn’ which, as you may have guessed, is a converted barn house. The Barn sleeps ten people comfortably in two dorms and also has a pool table, dart board, convervatory, patio and heaps more – not to mention you also have access to two swimming pools in the Only Fools And Horses complex. So, if you fancy somewhere that’s a little different, this gets our vote!
Borders Beyond
Situated just a bit outside the city centre in Ponsonby, Borders Beyond Backpackers really give you the best bang for your buck with beds in a four person dorm costing just $20 per night. Don’t let the location of this hostel fool you though, Ponsonby with it’s bar lined streets is one of the best suburbs in Auckland, outside the city centre, to have a great night out in!
Piha Surf
Piha is probably the most popular beach in Auckland, it’s huge waves making surfers from all over flock to it’s shores. The Piha Surf backpackers is situated just a stone’s throw away from the beach and offers comfortable accommodation on it’s 7-acre private property from only $24 per night. Set in the peaceful bush, with only a short walk to the beach, it’s a perfect surfer’s retreat!
